HEATHER GREEN ARTIST TALK
Heather Green discusses her current exhbition, Victims & Villains, on view at Kruger Gallery Chicago, 3709 N Southport Ave. Green's show explores two bodies of work. The first is based on the mug shot, and Green's paintings explore the mug shots of Marissa Alexander, George Zimmerman, Austin Smith Clem, and Darren Deon Vann. Compelled to pursue justice, Green's work challenges our current sentencing practices and prison outcomes.
Her second body of work, #yesallwomen, scrutinizes rape culture, specifically looking at the Steubenville rape case of 2012 and the subsequent conviction of Trent Mays and Ma'lik Richmond in 2013. Blurring the portraits of people who hide behind social media to judge and criticize, Green cuts from the page stenciled dialogue from twitter feeds that were posted in the aftermath of the Mays/Richmond trial, and gives pause for the viewer to consider the undercurrent of misogyny and rape apologism pervasive in our society.
